Foster Care Fortnight - Celebrating the Everyday Moments This Foster Care Fortnight

Published 12 May 2026

This Foster Care Fortnight, we are proud to celebrate the real stories, relationships and moments that show the true impact of fostering.

The theme this year is “This is Fostering” — a reminder that fostering is not just about providing a home, but about creating stability, building trust, encouraging growth, and helping young people believe in themselves again.

At Affinity, we see these moments every single day. Sometimes they are big milestones, but often the most powerful changes are found in the quieter, everyday moments that many people would never see.

One young person recently reminded us exactly why fostering matters so much.

Over recent months, D has made incredibly positive progress in foster care, showing growing confidence, maturity and independence in many areas of daily life. While every child’s journey is unique, it is often the small steps forward that tell the biggest story.

One particularly special moment came when D decided to save his pocket money to buy himself a new Xbox controller. To many people, this may seem like a simple purchase, but for D it represented something much bigger — patience, responsibility, planning ahead, and understanding the value of money while working towards something important to him.

Alongside this, D continues to show kindness and thoughtfulness around the home every day. Whether helping tidy up, taking plates into the kitchen, or simply checking if anyone needs help, these gestures demonstrate growing confidence, empathy and a sense of belonging within the family environment.

D has also embraced opportunities to explore new experiences and activities. He especially enjoyed his recent school trip to Duxford and was excited to talk about the World War 2 planes he saw there afterwards. He continues to engage positively in school swimming, Lego building, drawing, trampoline play and online gaming with friends — all helping him to build confidence, relationships and enjoyment in everyday childhood experiences.

Stories like D’s are what Foster Care Fortnight is all about.

Fostering is not always about dramatic transformations overnight. More often, it is about consistency, patience and care over time. It is about helping a child feel safe enough to laugh again, confident enough to try new things, and secure enough to feel that they truly belong.

At Affinity, we are continually inspired by the compassion, resilience and dedication shown by our foster carers, staff teams and young people themselves. The positive outcomes we see are built through strong relationships, therapeutic support, encouragement and the unwavering belief that every young person deserves the opportunity to thrive.

This Foster Care Fortnight, we want to say thank you to every foster carer, supervising social worker, therapist, support worker, birth child and young person who forms part of our fostering family. Your impact reaches far beyond what can ever be written in a report or measured in statistics.

Because fostering changes lives — often in the smallest moments, which end up meaning the most.
