Affinity Fostering

Disabled Fostering

Disability Fostering is where you as a foster carer look after a child or young person with a physical, mental, or health related disability.

Things to consider...

Deciding to become a foster carer for children with complex or additional needs requires a number of considerations. Looking after a child or young person with a disability can require a significant amount of extra time and attention. This means that it could potentially have an impact on the rest of your family and any other children who live with you.

Our foster carers who work with disabled foster children all say that while welcoming a child with additional needs into your home can be challenging, it’s also amazing to see the positive impact that a caring environment can make. One of the biggest rewards is watching a young person with disabilities achieve their potential to live a fulfilled life.

During the fostering process, our team will talk to you about your preferences and capability to foster a child or young person with disabilities or learning difficulties. We ensure we match children with disabilities to foster carers who have the skills required to meet the child’s needs. However, all foster carers must share the same outlook in that they must be interested in helping them reach their full potential, be willing to undergo specific extra training, and if appropriate, to learn related communication or medical skills. We have already supported our foster carers with many bespoke courses designed for their specific circumstances, and examples include learning Makaton, Play Therapy diplomas and many more specific courses for those fostering children with specific additional needs, as well as providing access to therapists and counsellors.

If you have patience, understanding and a willingness to learn then you have the skills we are looking for to foster a disabled young person. Please get in touch today.
